FAQs
Why is a family doctor right for my maternity care?
A family doctor is uniquely qualified to provide comprehensive, seamless medical care for you before, during and after your pregnancy as well as care for your newborn. Family doctors also treat medical concerns not specifically related to pregnancy and have a breadth of medical knowledge. This can reduce doctors appointments during your pregnancy and after your baby’s birth as you can see the same doctor for all of your medical needs for yourself and your new baby.
What is ‘Patient-centre maternity care’?
Patient-centred maternity care means we strive to create a relationship between you and your doctor.
Dr. Carnevale Lizotte is the doctor who will manage your maternity care, see you for each prenatal and postpartum appointment, and be on-call for your labour and birth care.
The PCMC model is distinct from a common model of maternity care where patients may see any member of a group of physicians or midwives who provide care to a group of shared patients. PCMC seeks to build a safe, trusting relationship between you and the doctor who will provide your care.
Who will deliver my baby?
Dr. Carnevale Lizotte provides on-call labour and birth care for her patients’ delivery at Northumberland Hills Hospital and she will be your planned birth attendant.
When should I book my first prenatal appointment?
You or your family doctor can refer to Dr. Carnevale Lizotte as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. If you have a family doctor, please inquire with them regarding your initial prenatal care. We welcome referrals at any stage of pregnancy.
What if I need to see a specialist during my pregnancy?
Dr. Carnevale Lizotte provides comprehensive, evidence based prenatal care. If additional review is needed by a pregnancy specialist, ie. an Obstetrician, there are local obstetricians who can provide consultation, this will be arranged for you. You can continue to see Dr. Carnevale Lizotte while you are being seen by a specialist.
How is prenatal and newborn care provided safely during the COVID pandemic?
Dr. Carnevale Lizotte provides a hybrid of virtual and in person care during your pregnancy. This is in accordance with the latest guidelines and recommendations by our province, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and the Canadian College of Family Physicians. This approach can be tailored to suit your specific needs. Your in person prenatal appointments will take place at The Cobourg Clinic where best infection control practices have been implemented.
